Melania Trump wished fans a Merry Christmas with a Santa-themed selfie that flatlined on social media.
The 47-year-old tweeted the selfie Monday using a holiday filter that included a Santa hat and dancing golden reindeer, from Mar-a-Lago, President Trump’s Palm Beach, Fla., resort, where the first family is spending the holidays.
The photo depicted Melania with a surprised facial expression that some called “duck face,” “disgraceful,” and sexy.
Melania tweeted the photo after she and the president spent the day answering phone calls from children inquiring about Santa’s sleigh journey, as part of the Track Santa program by the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD). The organization provides Santa updates via social media and phone calls. Per CBS News, the president, while hearing one child’s wish list, said, “Oh, building blocks, that’s what I always liked too. I predict that Santa will bring you building blocks, so many you can’t use them all.”
Since the start of the season, the first lady has been eye-rolled for her celebratory efforts. When the White House unveiled this year’s Christmas decorations — a collection called “Time-Honored Traditions” that included 71 wreaths, 12,000 ornaments, and 18,000 feet of lights — designed by Melania herself, critics on the internet deemed it creepy.
According to a recent poll by CNN, Melania’s approval rating is high, however, with 44 percent of people holding a positive view of the first lady, while 35 percent disagree (that’s compared to the president, who scores 41 percent favorable and 57 percent unfavorable).
Still, she’s suffered a relatability problem, in part due to her $100-million Versailles-inspired penthouse at Trump Tower, among assistants and a personal chef, where she gave son Barron, now 11, nightly caviar skin treatments and dressed him in suits and ties.
Melania has also been critiqued for her upscale footwear while visiting Texas on three separate trips after Hurricane Harvey and during one trip to Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria. Each time, Melania’s choice to wear stilettos to board Air Force One elicited an outcry from people who accused her of being “out of touch.” However, in all cases, the first lady changed into utilitarian sneakers or boots upon landing.
No matter your view of Melania Trump, it’s apparent she can’t do much without the public taking a vocal stance.
